Lil’ Kim, originally born in Brooklyn as Kimberly Jones spent her youth on the streets but when she came to the attention of rap icon, Notorious B.I.G., she was instantly christened as the first lady of B.I.G’s crew and rap group, Junior M.A.F.I.A. She first appeared on Junior M.A.F.I.A.’s certified gold release, “Conspiracy”, and then followed up with her solo debut “Hardcore” which spawned three #1 singles, going double platinum. Her next two albums, Notorious K.I.M. and La Bella Mafia were also certified platinum, making Kim, along with Missy Elliott, one of only two female rap stars to reach the milestone of releasing three platinum selling albums.
Kim’s aggressive rap style, overt and unapologetic sexually charged lyricism and equally sensational and seductive outfits were groundbreaking at the time. Her style has been oft-imitated and in one instance of creative borrowing, raised the ire of the queen bee. Nikki Minaj, the heir apparent of Kim’s title has borrowed heavily from the originator, with imagery, style and content that recalls Kim’s high-profile career. Clearly, Minaj has taken the brazen persona and run with it but by not footnoting the author, she put herself in Kim’s crosshairs. A war of words ensued, followed up by Kim’s Black Friday mixtape an 18 song volley directed straight at Minaj. The beef has invigorated Kim, giving her motivation to reclaim her place in the industry which she intends to accomplish, starting with the Return of Queen tour landing in San Francisco at the Mezzanine on Monday, June 11th
